Healthy Stromboli: A Low-Calorie Twist on a Classic Favorite

This dish takes the classic Stromboli and gives it a nutritious makeover, creating a lighter version that still packs a punch of flavor.

Ingredients
  

For the Stromboli:
  • 1 sourdough pizza crust
  • 1 cup pizza sauce of choice
  • 1/2 cup Swiss cheese shredded or sliced
  • 1/2 cup Muenster cheese shredded or sliced
  • deli meats of choice e.g., salami, pepperoni, turkey, ham, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion thinly sliced
  • 1/2 sweet onion thinly sliced
For the Garlic Butter:
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Method
 

Prepare the Onions:
  1. Slice the red onion and sweet onion.
  2. Toast the slices in a pan over medium heat for about 3 minutes, until softened and slightly caramelized.
Assemble the Stromboli:
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spread pizza sauce evenly over one side of each piece of sourdough pizza crust.
  3. On one piece of crust, layer the deli meats and shredded Swiss and Muenster cheeses on top of the sauce.
  4. Scatter the toasted onions over the meats and cheese.
  5. Place the second piece of crust on top, sauce-side down, to create a sandwich
Bake:
  1. Place the assembled Stromboli on a baking sheet.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown and crispy.
Serve:
  1. Slice in half and enjoy!
